The alphanumeric format for registration plates is "XX โˆ‡ number+letter(s)" or "XX โˆ‡ personalised letters+number";

XX - one or two letters which indicate the local registration office (district where the registered possessor resides). As a general rule, State capitals have one letter; other districts have two letters. โˆ‡ - the coat of arms of the Austrian state the district belongs to have a dash (โ€“) instead A three to six-letter/number sequence which uniquely distinguishes each of the vehicles displaying the same initial area code.

  • The letter Q is excluded from all sequences.

  • The letters used in licence plates include all standard Latin alphabet letters outside of Q (not used at all in the Polish language).
  • The letters B, D, I, O, and Z cannot be used in series area (on the right, after the gap), because they could be confused with similarly-looking digits.
  • Custom plates are allowed to include these letters though. The leading 0 in numbers is part of the code and is never omitted.
